History

Camden County Jail was established in 1844 to house prisoners convicted of crimes in Camden County, New Jersey. The original jail was a small, stone building located on Market Street in Camden. It was quickly overcrowded, and in 1854 a new jail was built on Haddon Avenue in Camden. The new jail was a more substantial structure, but it too was quickly overcrowded.

Expansion and Upgrades

In 1902, a new wing was added to the jail, and in 1914 a new cell block was built. In the 1920s, the jail underwent a major renovation, which included the addition of a new administration building and a new infirmary. The renovation also included the installation of new security features, such as bars on the windows and doors and a new locking system.

Overcrowding and Reform

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Camden County Jail became increasingly overcrowded. This overcrowding led to a number of problems, including violence, disease, and unsanitary conditions.
